BIRTH CERTIFICATES

 

 

Birth certificates are confidential and only those persons whose appear on the certificate (mother, father, or person themselves) are entitled to receive copies with identification. Grandparents can also obtain copies with the proper identification and proof of relationship (if you are a paternal grandparent your son’s name must be on the certificate in order to obtain a copy). Legal court appointed guardians or persons with power of attorney must provide a copy of the papers. Step parents are not allowed to obtain records.

 

Legal court order change of names can be obtained from the Probate Court in the town in which you live, once the order is granted you bring a copy to our office (if you were born in Bridgeport) so that the record can be amended.

 

The fee for a large Birth certificate is twenty dollars ($20.00) and the fee for a small Birth certificate is fifteen dollars ($15.00). When coming to the office you must present a photo id or two forms of identification if you don’t have a photo.

 

When writing in for a birth certificate, you give your name at birth, date of birth, mother’s maiden name, and father’s name.  Enclose a twenty dollar ($20.00) money order and a copy of a photo id for a large Birth certificate or a fifteen dollar ($15.00) money order and a copy of a photo id for a small Birth certificate. Again if you don’t have a photo id, you must give two other forms of id.  Turn around time is ten to fourteen days. Requests will not be filled without identification.
