Breastfeeding is considered the gold standard in infant feeding.  As such, it is a WIC Program cornerstone, and  routinely encouraged. The month of August has been designated as Breastfeeding Month by the State of Connecticut WIC Program, to highlight its many healthful benefits, as well as nurturing relevence. To celebrate the dedication and tenacity of WIC's breastfeeding moms, the program's Breastfeeding Coordinator arranges a unique and festive observance in their honor.  In the last several years, it has been a fun day at Beardsley Zoo (Connecticut's only zoo).  WIC's breastfeeding young families are invited to enjoy organized interactive musical activities, which include games, singing, and dancing.  They are also free to bring a lunch and to visit all the zoo's exhibits,  at no cost.

WIC staff host an annual Christmas Ornament Contest for participants.  Parents are invited to create an ornament from WIC approved food wrapping.  Each and every entry is a winner.  Impartial judges designate which ornament takes first to last place.  Based on that, the payee and his/her child are invited to select an unwrapped toy and storybook.  A Santa Claus is on hand the day the ornaments are due, for a free photo opportunity. The pictures are ready when parents come in to choose their prize.

WIC is an equal opportunity provider and employer.  If you believe that you have been discriminated    against  because of race, color, national origin, age, sex or disability you should write immediately to the  Secretary of Agriculture, USDA, Washington, D.C.
