The WIC Program’s purpose is to provide improved healthcare access to greater Bridgeport area residents who are from low and moderate-income families, are pregnant/post-partum women, infants, or children, up to age 5 and who are, or may become at risk of developing nutrition-related health problems. Eligible participants receive, at no cost to them:
Nutrition education through personalized education and/or group sessions.
Specific, age appropriate foods that are selected for their iron, vitamin and nutrient content. These are provided through checks which clearly list the amount /type of food authorized to be purchased with each check.
Medical and Social Service referrals, as appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions by New Applicants to the Program Question: How long after their interview will they receive WIC benefits?
Answer:WIC checks are issued at the initially scheduled interview, provided that the potential payee/participant has met prerequisite criteria as designated by State/Federal regulations.
Question:What type of class am I scheduled to take, and how long will I have to wait after that to receive my WIC checks? Answer:The nutrition topic changes quarterly.A video that is both pertinent and fitting is usually shown, and corresponding handout materials distributed, after a dialogue period for questions/answers is provided. Checks are printed while payees attend the group education session.There is only a brief wait as group attendees are called to sign for their checks. The entire process, from class time to check issuance rarely exceeds a half hour.
